01332 529121What Causes a Blocked Toilet?
The most common causes of toilet blockages in Derby homes are:
- Wet wipes: Even products labelled "flushable" do not break down in drainage systems the way toilet paper does. They accumulate at bends and restrictions in the pipe and are the single most common cause of toilet and sewer blockages.
- Too much toilet paper: Particularly in older Derby properties with narrower soil pipes, a large amount of paper in a single flush can catch at a bend.
- Nappies, sanitary products, cotton wool: These should never go down a toilet. They are non-degradable and will block the system.
- Build-up in older pipework: Soil pipes in Victorian and interwar properties in Normanton, Sinfin, and across the city centre can have years of accumulated debris that narrows the bore until a relatively small item causes a complete blockage.
- Drain blockage further down: If other fixtures — sinks, baths — are also draining slowly, the toilet blockage may be a symptom of a main drain problem rather than a blockage at the toilet itself.
What Not to Do
If your toilet is blocked, do not keep flushing. Each flush adds more water to a system that has nowhere to drain — the toilet bowl will overflow. If it is already close to the rim, stop flushing immediately and call us.
Chemical drain unblockers are not effective for toilet blockages caused by solid materials. They are designed for grease and organic build-up in sink drains, not for wipes or paper compacted in a soil pipe.
How We Clear It
- Closet auger: A specialist flexible rod with a rotating head that reaches into the toilet trap and breaks up or retrieves a blockage at or just below the pan. Fast and clean.
- High-pressure jetting: For blockages further down the soil pipe or underground drain — the jetter cuts through the obstruction and cleans the pipe walls.
- Drain rods: For solid objects further along the drain that need to be physically pushed through or retrieved.
When a Blocked Toilet Means a Bigger Problem
A toilet that blocks repeatedly, or where flushing causes gurgles or bubbles in other drains (bath, shower, kitchen sink), is usually a sign of a blockage or restriction in the main drain rather than in the toilet itself. Other symptoms include slow draining from multiple fixtures at the same time, or water rising in the toilet when the bath is drained.
In these cases we would extend the inspection to the main drain and may recommend a CCTV survey to identify whether there is a structural cause — root ingress, a displaced joint, or grease accumulation that jetting alone will not permanently resolve.
