Blocked Bath & Shower Drain in Derby

Standing water in the bath or shower is almost always a blocked trap or waste pipe — hair and soap build-up cleared fast. We identify whether it's at the fixture or further down and clear it properly, not just temporarily.

What Causes a Bath or Shower Drain to Block

Bath and shower drain blockages have a predictable cause: hair. Hair sheds naturally during bathing and collects at the plug or in the trap. Soap scum — residue from soap and shampoo products — binds the hair together and creates an increasingly dense plug in the trap and the waste pipe below it. The blockage develops gradually over weeks, starting with a drain that is noticeably slower and progressing to one that holds standing water.

In Derby homes with moderately hard water, limescale build-up on pipe walls contributes to the problem. The rough internal surface caused by scale deposits catches hair more readily than smooth PVC, and accelerates the rate at which blockages form.

Trap Blockage vs Waste Pipe Blockage

The location of the blockage matters for how it is cleared:

  • In the trap: The hair mass is at or just below the plug opening, accessible from above. Clearing it is fast — the trap is disassembled, cleaned, and the drain flows freely again. Most bathroom drain blockages are here.
  • In the waste pipe: Hair and soap scum that bypass the trap accumulate further down the pipe, often at a bend. This takes longer to clear and requires jetting or a flexible drain snake. Signs that the blockage has progressed this far include a trap that is visibly clear but still slow drainage.

Shower Trays and Walk-in Showers

Walk-in shower trays typically have very low-profile drainage and a shallow fall — they are more sensitive to partial blockages than a bath because the volume of water being discharged in a short time is higher. A shower tray that drains adequately in normal use but pools noticeably in a long shower almost always has a trap or waste pipe that is approaching full blockage. Clearing it before it stops completely is easier and cheaper than calling as an emergency.

When It Is Not the Trap

If clearing the bath or shower trap does not resolve the slow drainage, or if multiple bathroom fixtures are draining slowly at the same time, the blockage has extended into the underground drain. When the bath drains slowly at the same time as the toilet is slow to clear or gurgles after flushing, the whole-house drain needs inspecting — the bath is just the most visible symptom.

Prevention

A hair catcher — a simple mesh screen placed over the shower or bath plug — prevents hair from entering the trap in the first place and is the most effective prevention available. Rinsing the hair catcher after every shower takes seconds. We always recommend fitting one after clearing a bath or shower drain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my bath not draining properly?
The vast majority of bath drainage problems are caused by hair accumulating at or around the plug and in the trap below it, combined with soap scum binding the hair into a solid mass. This is a gradual process — the drain gets slower over weeks until it barely drains at all. Clearing the trap and the waste pipe below it solves it immediately.
Could it be a hard water or limescale problem?
Possibly contributing, yes. Derby's water is moderately hard, which means scale builds up on the inside of pipes over time. Scale creates a rough surface that traps hair and soap debris more readily, accelerating the blockage. If the trap is cleared but the drain remains slow, scale build-up further down the waste pipe may be restricting flow — drain descaling addresses that.
Can I fix a blocked bath drain myself?
If the blockage is in the trap, yes — many bath traps are accessible and can be cleaned by hand or with a basic drain snake. If clearing the trap does not restore full drainage, or if you cannot access the trap, the blockage has progressed further down the waste pipe and we are a more efficient option than spending an afternoon on it.
My shower drain is completely blocked and the tray is filling up. Is this urgent?
It needs attention today, but it is not typically a safety emergency in the way a sewage backup would be. The risk is overflow if the tray fills faster than it drains. Call us and we can usually attend the same day. Avoid using the shower until it is cleared.
